Crispy Beer Batter Fish Recipe

Crispy beer batter fish is a classic seafood dish that delivers a crunchy coating and tender, flaky fish inside. Made with simple pantry ingredients, this recipe creates a light and crispy batter that turns ordinary white fish into a delicious meal.

The secret to the perfect texture is the beer in the batter. Beer helps create a light and airy coating that fries up thin, golden, and incredibly crisp while still allowing the delicate flavor of the fish to shine through.

Once fried, the fish becomes beautifully crunchy on the outside while staying moist and tender on the inside. It is a huge upgrade from typical frozen fish sticks, giving you restaurant quality results right at home.

This recipe is also a great way to use fish you already have in the freezer. Fresh or frozen white fish works well, making it an easy meal to prepare whenever you want something comforting and satisfying.

Crispy beer batter fish is incredibly versatile when it comes to serving. It pairs perfectly with homemade tartar sauce, fresh lemon wedges, and a side of fries for a classic fish and chips style meal.

It also works wonderfully for fish tacos. Simply tuck the crispy fish into warm tortillas and top with shredded cabbage, fresh salsa, or a creamy sauce for a flavorful and satisfying dish.

Even if you do not usually keep beer in your fridge, it is worth picking up just for this recipe. The beer helps create that signature light, crisp coating that makes fried fish so irresistible.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs. white fish, like cod or tilapia
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 2 tsp seasoned salt
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 1/3 cups beer
  • Canola oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Add oil to a large, heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer until it reaches about 2–3 inches in depth. Heat the oil to 375°F.
  2. While the oil heats, cut the fish into stick-shaped pieces, roughly 1 inch wide and 3 inches long. Pat the fish dry with paper towels and season lightly with salt and pepper.
  3. To prepare the beer batter, whisk together the flour, garlic powder, paprika, and seasoned salt in a bowl. Stir in the lightly beaten egg, then gradually whisk in the beer until the batter is smooth and free of lumps.
  4. Dip each piece of fish into the batter, coating it completely, then carefully place it into the hot oil. Fry for 3–4 minutes, or until the fish is golden brown and crisp.
  5. Remove the fish and place it on a wire rack to drain excess oil. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • Leftover fried fish can be reheated in an air fryer or toaster oven at 325°F until heated through and crispy again.
