Substitutions and variations

One of the best things about this sandwich is how easy it is to make it your own. If you’re looking for easy lunch ideas, this air fryer grilled cheese is endlessly customizable, whether you’re swapping ingredients or just playing with new flavors.

Start with the bread. If you don’t have white bread on hand, sourdough adds a nice crunch, whole wheat gives a slightly different feel, and even a croissant can turn it into something a bit more indulgent.

The cheese is just as flexible. Cheddar is classic, but options like gouda, Swiss, provolone, or pepper jack all work beautifully. You can even combine two kinds, like sharp cheddar and mozzarella, for extra flavor and that perfect melt.

Instead of butter, you can spread mayonnaise on the outside for an even, golden crust. It’s easy to work with and helps the bread toast up nicely. A light brush of olive oil works well too if that’s what you have on hand.

If you want to take things further, try adding extras like Dijon mustard, pesto, ham, turkey, or a slice of tomato. You can even turn it into a pizza-inspired version with marinara, pepperoni, and mozzarella.

Don’t be afraid to experiment a little. This sandwich is as flexible as it gets, and it’s a fun way to switch up your routine without much effort.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 8 minutes
Total Time 13 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 pieces sandwich bread
  • 4 slices cheese I used 2 cheddar and 2 Havarti
  • 3 tablespoons butter could also use mayonnaise

Instructions

  1. Spread butter or mayonnaise on one side of each slice of bread.
  2. Place one slice, spread side down, in the air fryer basket. Add 2 slices of cheese on top, then cover with another slice of bread, spread side up.
  3. Air fry at 370°F for 4 minutes. Flip the sandwich and cook for another 4 minutes, or until golden and toasted to your liking. Serve warm.

Notes

  • I did not preheat the air fryer for this recipe, but if your model requires it, preheat for 2–3 minutes.
  • Avoid overcrowding the basket. Depending on the size of the bread, most air fryers can fit about two sandwiches at a time.
  • Use a toothpick to help secure the sandwich if needed. If the bread is thin or lightweight, placing a toothpick in the center can prevent it from shifting or separating as the hot air circulates during cooking.
